| Aug 2024 | VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM | At around 36,500 miles, my Toyota Corolla began experiencing issues with the coolant bypass valve, leading to engine overheating. This malfunction has significantly impacted my ability to drive safely, as the vehicle displays a notification every five seconds, obstructing my view of the digital speedometer and making it difficult to accurately monitor my speed. The issue was not indicated by a check engine light but a persistent "Engine Maintenance Required" message. This defect poses a serious safety risk, and there's a potential class-action lawsuit in progress regarding this very issue, suggesting Toyota might have known about the defect but failed to disclose it. The faulty component is not available for inspection upon request. As more people began to experience similar circumstances, it could lead to fatalities. Other participants to the forums says the issues start when their covered warranty expires. Within these forums there's a inconstancy of service centers honoring fixes, with no cost, knowing that there is an issue. I took the car to both a third-party mechanic and an authorized dealership, and both confirmed the problem. I was quoted $732.85 for the parts and labor within my area. I also called Toyota Global which I was told "a low mileage car shouldn't be having this issue", however, there are countless of forums saying otherwise. **Toyota Models Affected** 2019 Toyota RAV4 2020 Toyota RAV4 2021 Toyota RAV4 2022 Toyota RAV4 2023 Toyota RAV4 2019 Toyota Corolla 2020 Toyota Corolla 2021 Toyota Corolla 2022 Toyota Corolla 2023 Toyota Corolla [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Aug 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | The Coolant Bypass Valve needs to be replaced prematurely. This issue seems to be fairly commonplace among Toyota’s cars. My car only has 62,990 on the odo. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Aug 2024 | ENGINE | I am up to date with all my maintenance but at 67k miles I had a message stating “Engine Maintenance Required” message on my dashboard. I took it to the dealership and they identified the cooler bypass valve needed to be replace, apparently this is a common issue and has not been addressed by Toyota. Plus it’s difficult to find the part that needs to be replaced. There was no check engine light, and everytime I turned on the AC the engine maintenance required message would pop back up. If this is a known issue Toyota needs to make this issue public and parts available. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Aug 2024 | ENGINE | I got a “Engine Maintenance Required” warning message. I check with the dealer, the dealer inspected and told me about a faulty coolant bypass valve which the dealership told us a common problem for Toyota RAV4 and Corolla. The dealer did a diagnostic and found that engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery - (P268115). They asked me to order the part. A faulty coolant bypass valve risked my vehicle of a failure of the cooling system and so the engine. I had to pay $113.40 for the diagnostic and $331.75 for repair. Since it is a common problem, the manufacturer has to recall and replace the faulty part and pay the cost of the part and labor for replacing the faulty part. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Aug 2024 | ENGINE | Coolant bypass valve is faulty and a lot of people have had this issue. Toyota is well aware of the faulty part and it affects many models and years of cars. They want to charge 800 bucks for an easy fix. It is robbery and could be a big safety hazard if it causes engine to stall while driving | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | POWER TRAIN | Transmission is in sport mode stopped at red light loud snapping sound and car lunged forward. Revs up with the transmission slipping with out forward movement acceleration after switching to drive mode it runs normally. Drove home didn't want to push my luck out on the road 38,683 miles on the vehicle | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | POWER TRAIN | Transmission failed at 106000 miles | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | ENGINE | All of sudden the Engine Maintenance Required sign popped up on the screen during when I was driving. The sign popped up every time I turn on the car. I took the car to Toyota service immediately and diagnostic showed it was Engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery or open. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | ENGINE | * What failed was engine coolant bypass valve. * Safety was at risk as the failure can lead to engine overheating over time. * it has been reproduced by countless others after their vehicle hits 30k to 70k. *there was a message on the dash about “engine issues and to take to dealer” | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Engine coolant bypass valve failed | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | On June 15, a message appeared on the multi-informational panel that the pre-collision system was unavailable. An orange warning symbol also appeared on the dash. Car was repaired a at Kendall, Toyota, 10943 S. Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33156 in Kendall, Florida. The Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor was replaced. The unit itself cost $843 and replacement labor was $350. Like other Toyota radar sensors, I believe this one has design defects. It is a safety issue. I assume that many people will not replace it. The message on the panel does not say the unit needs replacement. I retained the faulty unit and it is available for inspection. It is Toyota part #88210-07010. There are no signs of damage that I could see. The unit has not been open and I have put it in a baggie. It has not been inspected by anyone. The new part has the same part number. There were no prior warnings or symptoms. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM | we took our corolla to the San Luis Obispo toyota dealership for replacement of fuel pump per national recall of that part. Since then whenever we park the car on an incline we can strongly smell gas fumes in the cabin. When we took it back stating the problem they took it in but did not touch anything on the car (there were items on the back seat they would need to remove I order to get to the gas tank that contains the fuel pump.) When we went in the invoice was marked "call after five" in pencil | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE | Engine Coolant Bypass Valve faulty. Charged $176.95 for the dealer to diagnose what is already known issue. The dealer wanted $663 to replace the part. Toyota knows about this issue yet acts like they had to perform $176 diagnose. The car never blew any codes CIL and they say that this particular part doesnt cause a code but had to use a " special" diagnose tool. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE | My service engine came on took to dealership they said my coolant bypass valve no good and iam always have to change out my brake pads on the front | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2024 | AIR BAGS | While driving on the highway the airbag sensor light came on. I did not hit anything and air bags did not deploy but the light is on showing some issue but I can not get into dealership to check for sometime. There are other recalls on this issue for this same car but not for my particular VIN. Sure seems like a safety issue that Toyota should check out for free to owners. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | POWER TRAIN | The bypass coolant valve has failed. Car displays message stating engine maintenance required but no other warning signs. Diagnostic test proved that it’s the bypass coolant valves. Upon further research this seems to be a frequent problem on the 2019 to 2022 Toyotas. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Coolant valve is faulty. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | POWER TRAIN | The clutch slave cylinder started leaking fluid. Luckily I noticed this issue before the level was too low. This is especially dangerous as this fluid is shared with the brake system so a loss of too much fluid could cause both a loss of clutch control and a loss of brakes. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic and the issue was found. This issue is also very commonly reported on forums about the 2019 corolla hatchback with a manual transmission. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2024 | POWER TRAIN | Clutch/transmission going out. Would not go into gear while driving ! Turned car off then started it up again and regained function. Replaced entire clutch components back in July of 2022. Been driving manual transmission vehicles for over 20 years and never had an issue with clutch or transmission. Plenty of documentation of this issue on Toyota forum sites . | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2024 | ENGINE | Engine coolant bypass valve circuit short to battery or open - code P268115 Engine maintenance alert light appeared after (a day after, and then would not be on, and sometimes turn on, erratic maintenance message) I brought car in for scheduled engine maintenance per Toyota. The Toyota technician advised me to immediately take care of it but does not have the part in stock. This is the Toyota Dealer service in Manhattan Beach, CA. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2024 | AIR BAGS | On February 17, 2024 I was involved in a hit and run. I was T-boned on the passenger side and the front passenger door wouldn't open and no airbags deployed. Later on in February I received a Toyota Airbag Contol Unit Settlement. I haven't ever received an recall information on any recalls for my vehicle. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 3 Towed | Unknown |
| Mar 2024 | ENGINE | ENGINE MAINTENANCE CAME ON, TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST SHOWED COOLANT BYPASS VALVE. APPARENTLY THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE AND IF NOT TAKING CARE OF, IT COULD CAUSE MAJOR PROBLEMS. I WAS TOLD THE PART IS $200 PLUS AND LABOR IS $500 PLUS. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE AND FIXED FREE OF CHARGE BY TOYOTA. IN DOING A GOOGLE SEARCH, SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ARE LISTED REGARDING THIS ISSUE. THE GENTLEMAN AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I TOOK MY CAR STATED HE HAS DONE SEVERAL VEHICLES RECENTLY WITH THIS ISSUE. I DON'T THINK USE AS A CUSTOMER SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THIS KNOWN ISSUE BY TOYOTA. I'M ALSO STILL WAITING TO GET THE RECALL FIXED ON MY MOTHER'S TOYOTA RAV4 RECALL WHICH I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION ON BACK IN EARLY 2023. THEIR EXCUSE IS NOT PARTS AVAILABLE. SO IN THE MEAN TIME, IF THE VEHICLE CATCHES FIRE, THEY SAY OH WELL. I AM OVER TOYOTA GETTING AWAY WITH THIS. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Mar 2024 | ENGINE | 4 years after production with approx 44k miles the car began displaying the message “engine maintained required visit dealer” after investigating discovered coolant valve was the issue. Problem seems to be a common occurrence with the model car for other owners. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
