Methodology
What This Site Does
CarCheckCost collects official vehicle recall and complaint data from U.S. government sources, organizes it by make, model, and year, and presents it alongside fuel cost calculators and ownership tools. Pages are generated from official data using human-reviewed templates.
We do not write opinion articles or invent safety advice.
Data Sources
- Official recall campaign data: official recall records by model year, make, model, component, and campaign number.
- Official recall completion reports: campaign-level recall completion reports, including involved population, remedied population, and report period when available.
- Official complaints data: consumer-submitted complaint reports by model year, make, model, and component.
- Official complaint enrichment data: complaint enrichment fields such as incident date, mileage at failure, towing, medical attention, incident state, and component-level identifiers.
- Official manufacturer communications: manufacturer service bulletins, warranty extensions, repair instructions, software notices, service campaigns, and other communications.
- Official safety ratings: official crash-test and rollover ratings for tested vehicle variants.
- Official defect investigations: federal investigations with open/closed status, subject, summary, and related recall campaign numbers when present.
- Official vehicle identification data: vehicle specification data used for make/model/year normalization and voluntary VIN decoding.
- Official fuel economy data: official fuel economy ratings, annual fuel cost fields, emissions details, EV range, charging, and representative vehicle attributes when available.
- Official fuel price data: default U.S. fuel and electricity prices for calculator prefill values.
- Official electricity price data: U.S. and state average residential electricity prices for EV calculator defaults when imported.
- Public station locator tools: public charging and alternative-fuel station locator entry points.

How Data Is Processed
- Data is imported on a regular automated schedule.
- Records are normalized by make, model, year, and component.
- Duplicate records are detected and removed.
- Recall and complaint text is presented from official records and standardized fields. We do not generate safety advice, risk assessments, or legal conclusions.
- Fuel cost calculators use official MPG ratings where available, combined with imported fuel-price defaults when available. The calculator labels the geography and date for imported defaults.
- State-aware EV estimates use a user-selected state price when official residential electricity rows are available. The site does not infer, request, or store a user's location for this calculation.
- Expanded fuel economy fields come from the representative official vehicle match for the page. Trim, drivetrain, battery, and tire packages can differ from a user's exact vehicle.
- Shared MPG summaries, when imported, are user-submitted fuel economy observations and are not official label estimates.
- Safety ratings are matched by model year, make, model, and tested variant. When multiple variants exist, a representative display variant is selected and the other imported variants remain visible.
- Defect investigations are matched by model year, make, and model. Related recall campaign links are shown only when the investigation record includes a campaign number that matches an imported recall.
- Recall completion reports are matched by campaign number and shown on recall rows only when the campaign-level match is clear.
- Complaint flat-file enrichment updates existing API-imported complaint rows by ODI number. It does not create new complaint rows in this phase.
- Pages are generated from templates and assigned a quality score. Pages below the quality threshold are not indexed by search engines.
- VIN searches decode the VIN through an official vehicle identification service and show selected vehicle-identification fields before linking to model-year safety content, official VIN recall lookup, and public VIN status tools. Raw VINs are not stored by this flow.
What This Site Does Not Do
- We do not perform official VIN recall checks.
- We do not verify manufacturer claims or confirm defect severity.
- We do not provide legal, insurance, or medical advice.
- We do not assess whether a vehicle is safe to drive or whether a recall is severe.
- We do not generate repair cost estimates without a reliable data source.
Disclaimers
Recalls: Recall data is based on official records. This site is not an official VIN recall check. Always confirm open recalls with official VIN recall tools, the manufacturer, or an authorized dealer.
VIN decode: VIN decoding is manufacturer-submitted identification data. It is not accident history, ownership history, title status, odometer history, lien history, theft status, or a full vehicle history report.
Recall completion reports: Completion report data is campaign-level, delayed, and not VIN-specific. It does not prove whether a particular vehicle has been repaired.
Complaints: Complaint data reflects consumer-submitted reports. A complaint is not proof of a defect, recall, or manufacturer fault. Enriched flat-file fields are shown only when the complaint can be matched to an existing imported row.
Manufacturer communications: Manufacturer communications are not recalls. They can include service bulletins, repair instructions, warranty extensions, software updates, service campaigns, and other notices.
Safety ratings: Official ratings can vary by tested body style, trim, drivetrain, or variant. A model-year page should not be read as a guarantee that every trim has the exact same rating.
Defect investigations: Investigations are not recalls. They can remain open, close without a recall, or reference a related recall campaign when one exists in the source record.
Calculators: Cost estimates are informational and based on the assumptions shown. Default fuel and electricity prices are editable, and imported defaults show their geography and date. Actual costs vary by location, usage, trim, repair provider, insurer, and vehicle condition.
Station links: Station data is location and network information, not a guarantee that a specific vehicle, connector, charger, fuel type, payment method, or station status is compatible.
Affiliates: We may earn a commission from some links or quote partners. This does not change the official recall or complaint data shown on this page.
