Date Component Summary Severity Mileage
Jan 2024 STRUCTURE Per the existing recall on my vehicle, the driver’s side door handle has failed. It will unlatch at random times (including when driving at speeds between 1-20 mph), it will not unlatch when attempting to get into the vehicle, and the sensors have started to fail causing the car to believe the door is open when it isn’t which has caused the car to do an emergency stop on several occasions while it was in motion. This luckily hasn’t led to a collision yet but it easily could. I took the vehicle in to be inspected back in May 2023 when my dealership notified me they had the equipment to inspect the handle. They confirmed it had failed and told me at that time that they would order the parts needed to replace the handle but it might be a while as they were on back order. I spoke with them earlier this month (January 2024) and was lied to that the inspection in May wasn’t a real inspection and that they had just completed the inspection during my January visit. They knowingly deceived me that the parts were ordered in May and told me the car was still drivable and not a safety risk. This dealership knowingly put me at risk for 8 months and never bothered to communicate with me about the true status of the recall on my vehicle.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER Driver car door intermittently pops open, while driving, when stopped, and when parked (not occupied). Car door locks intermittently stop working, meaning passengers cannot enter from outside, cannot open door from inside, doors do not unlock when key fob approaches. Also when this is happening, charge port shorts ie. disconnects/connects. When these issues are happening, defogger runs intermittently when parked, unless I enter car to manually turn off heating system. Turning off defogger with app does not stop defogging even when it says "off" in app. Seems tons of water is down in door... If the car is dry, if I roll the windows down then up, windows are COVERED with water. At times, front windows go down when trying to roll them up. Not safety, but internal ambient lighting system has two colors, one for dash, one for door lights. Door light color selection does not work, and doors only will show color of dash color selection.

Jan 2024 SERVICE BRAKES As you pull to a complete stop, in the final speed between 2mph and 0mph, the brake will pull away from my foot and go straight towards the floor. The car will lurch forward and then come to a complete stop. This happens 2-4 times per month and the dealership can’t find any service codes. My wife won’t drive the vehicle.

Jan 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER Since I purchased the car I had had difficulty with unlocking and locking the doors intermittently but had not yet had it looked by the dealer. I had the front passenger door repaired/replaced recently, and shortly after that the doors started randomly opening. For example, the trunk opened when I walked up to it, or the front drivers side door opened (not fully but partially, so still shut) while I was at the playground with the kids (I received a notification on my VW app that the door was open after we had been parked for quite a while. This progressed to the driver side door no longer locking. I decided the car was unsafe to drive when the drivers side front door opened while the car was in drive while I was stopped at a stop sign - so it started opening while I was operating the vehicle. Again, the door didn’t fully open, but I had to open the door fully to close it. I know VW recalled this car in the summer for this very reason, it seems like their fix either didn’t work or somehow was undone when the car was repaired.

Jan 2024 AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE I am writing to file a formal complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding a critical safety concern with my recently purchased vehicle, a VW ID 4 model from 2021-2023. Vehicle Information: VIN: [XXX] Make: Volkswagen Model: ID 4 Year: 2021-2023 Date of Purchase: January 5th, 2024 Incident Details: On [XXX], I experienced a hazardous incident involving sudden acceleration when releasing the brake pedal as I was coming to a stop and pulling into a parking space. Despite the fact that the pedal was not fully released, the vehicle accelerated forward, colliding with another vehicle at an approximate speed of 40-50 MPH. Shockingly, neither the airbags deployed nor did the safety automatic braking system engage. The incident raised significant safety concerns, especially considering similar reports from other VW ID 4 owners. Actions Taken: I promptly took the vehicle to VW Marin Dealership in San Rafael, CA, where their report claimed no issues with the vehicle. However, further research on my part revealed that this issue is prevalent among VW ID 4 models from 2021 to 2023. Attached to this letter, you will find pictures of both vehicles involved in the incident for your reference. Request for Investigation: I urge the NHTSA to thoroughly investigate this safety issue with VW ID 4 models from 2021-2023. The potential risks associated with sudden acceleration pose a serious threat to the safety of vehicle occupants and others on the road. Identifying and addressing the root cause of this problem is crucial to preventing future accidents and fatalities related to this faulty vehicle behavior. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated, and I trust that the NHTSA will take appropriate action to ensure the safety of all motorists. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Jan 2024 VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM I brought my 2023 Volkswagen id.4 Pro S EV to the Volkswagen dealer where the vehicle was purchased new earlier this year. This service visit was for the routine 10,000 mile inspection. Upon leaving the appointment, I drove out of the exit driveway of the dealership and made a left turn across a 5 lane road. Shortly after pulling out into the road (at approximately 15-20mph driving in "B" regenerative mode) all acceleration ability ceased despite my foot depressing the acceleration pedal. I had no ability to accelerate for about 3-4 seconds, leaving the car drifting in the middle of my turn. It wasn't until a few moments later after pumping the pedal that the acceleration ability returned. No warning lights or other changes were observed. I called the dealership about this, and after about a week they responded with "I spoke with the EV technician, he noted that because we plugged in the scanner to do the 10k service, it may have reset the basic settings of the E-motor. He noted it is normal for that to happen as when the engine dies and comes back on, it's the vehicle resetting the basic settings again. So it should not happen again." Meanwhile, I posted about my issue in an id.4 owners forum online and received 25 responses stating others had experienced the same concerning problem after a service visit. If VW dealers are releasing serviced vehicles to customers knowing what they are about to experience (momentary loss of acceleration upon first drive after visit), this represents a serious safety hazard. Fortunately, in my example, I was in a low-traffic scenario where the momentary loss, while panic inducing, did not cause me to impede traffic. However, if the road had been busier, my sudden and unexpected deceleration could have easily caused an accident. I feel very strongly that I am lucky nothing happened to me, and I also feel that the nonchalant responses from the dealer AND VW's corporate Instagram help chat were alarming and inappropriate.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION 30722 miles 12/12/23 – Vehicle continued to give the parking sensors error even after ensuring they were cleaned. The error will go away intermittently and then come back. Also got an error about parking assist not working. These errors never occurred before the 30000-mile service. Vehicle started giving electrical system errors and 12v battery errors again and had to be towed to Findlay Volkswagen St. George. The vehicle was in the shop 24 days, and I only received one email response from Pam Mahony-Coufal that the tech was still working with VW on the issue, and she would let me know when they were done. Texts and emails to check the status were met with no response. When I asked about a loaner, vehicle service manager Bryan said there were none available, and if there were one, it can’t be taken out of state. That poses a challenge for me since I live in Nevada and the dealership is in Utah. The dealership stated they found melted relays and replaced them. The vehicle was road tested 8 miles and returned to me 1/5/24.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM 20122 miles 7/31/2023 – Infotainment screen would reboot at random. I was also receiving the 12V battery message still and the electrical system error Dropped vehicle off at AutoNation VW for the 20000-mile service. Mark Daddario said that sometimes it’s how the customer drives the EV’s that makes the errors come up but couldn’t tell me anyway I was driving it incorrectly. I left the vehicle asking them to perform the maintenance, perform the door handle recall, and replace the flat tire under my VW Care tire protection plan. I left the vehicle with them for several days while I was out of town. Upon picking up the vehicle Chris Guilkey told me everything was performed, but the system was down so they couldn’t give me any paperwork. He handed me the key and pointed to my vehicle which was returned to me with 17% charge. Shortly after leaving the dealership the vehicle performed a thud and shut down. After waiting a few minutes, it restarted again. I drove back to the dealership and Chris didn’t see any errors on the screen so told me everything should be fine.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM 30848 miles 1/5/24 – Drove to Cedar City UT for an appointment after picking the vehicle up. The elevation is 5846 feet and the weather was about 20f. While going uphill on the interstate I started to receive messages about the headlights not working. Electrical system not working correctly error message came back. The left headlight was going on and off on its own and an error "fault vehicle lighting". "Please check left front turn signal." "Error dynamic cornering light." Heat can be turned on hi but doesn't warm the vehicle up. Heated seats don't seem to be working even when on 3. There is also a burnt electrical smell entering the vehicle. Vehicle was parked outside Findlay VW St. George service and won’t be checked in until 1/8 as they are closed on the weekend.

Jan 2024 POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM 5264 miles – Red warnings come on after charging vehicle. Pulled over and turned vehicle off. Took vehicle to AutoNation VW. By the time I arrived at dealership the red triangle and warning were no longer on the screen. Jeffrey Lopez had me sit in the waiting area. Tech scanned the vehicle but claimed they were unable to duplicate the concern. Nothing was documented; I was given no paperwork and was sent on my way.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM 9942 miles – Error: 12V power supply. Safely Park the vehicle! See owner’s manual. Pulled over a turned vehicle off. Took vehicle to AutoNation VW. By the time I arrived at the dealership the error was no longer on the screen. Jeffrey Lopez had said it would be checked as part of the 10,000-mile service (which according to Jeffrey included oil change.) I showed Jeff pictures of the error message. Tech performed the 10000-mile service, scanned the vehicle but claimed they were unable to duplicate concern. Nothing was documented regarding the electrical issue, only that I was there for a 10,0000 service synthetic oil. Inspection paperwork all claimed that the vehicle was in good condition. Upon leaving the dealership there was a thud and loss of power but then the power immediately came back.

Jan 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM 29987 miles 11/3/2023 – I brought my vehicle to Findlay VW Henderson NV for the 30,000-mile service, the 12V electrical issue, and the door handle recall. Andrew Lammers, the service consultant told me they’d check everything out while my vehicle was in the shop and before releasing it back to me. I received a call about a week later that there were parts hold. On 11/17 I was advised my vehicle was ready. I was told the 12V battery, high voltage system, and electrical were tested and were okay. 4-wheel alignment, front assist, and lane assist systems were also recalibrated. I was assured I shouldn’t have any electrical issues any longer. I picked my vehicle up 11/18, one day after I was notified it was finished.

Dec 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER The vehicle does not get 275 range fully charged as window sticker states. New vehicle with 600 miles on it only gets 242 range when fully charged. The vehicle is over stated to boost sales. You cannot lock the vehicle in any way, shape, or form unless you have the key fob. if you forget to lock your car, you cannot ask someone to lock it for you without a key. The car cannot be locked from interior door like a traditional door. Huge safety issue. To make it worse, the vehicle cannot be locked from the App like Volkswagen advertised. Scam all around.

Dec 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The driver's side door opened while I was driving the vehicle at around 25 mph How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The door opened by itself while the car was moving causing multiple safety issues to me the driver and others driving near me. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? We have an appointment to have it inspected by the dealer tomorrow on 12/6/23 Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Prior to the door opening while driving, the car door made several locking, unlocking nosies and then opened. Prior to this incident, the door would not open from the outside.

Dec 2023 FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM The car came to a sudden unexpected stop from about 10 miles per hour. Everything shut down and the car came to a harsh stop, skipping/shuddering/stuttering. Happened so fast and unexpectedly that it startled me. Almost like the brakes were locking up and pulsing. But no brakes were ever applied by me. After coming to a complete stop car was completely dark. I tried to press the brake pedal to start it and nothing. Tried the brake pedal a second time and it turned on allowing me to drive away. Shortly after this event a thumping or banging noise started to occur when I accelerate or decelerate. Almost like something is loose below my feet. Weird thing is the sound is not constant. Comes and goes. Seems to be triggered after I make a right turn. Car has been at the dealer since November 28,2023 for this issue and is still at the dealer as of December 5, 2023 . Aside from this I recently got the car back from the dealer after being in for a week to replace the right rear door handle as it was faulty and opened on its own. Apparently not the known recall though.

Dec 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER When I put drivers and passengers front window down part way and stop it and use the window control to put the window back up it goes down not up. Window has to go all the way down before it will go back up. I also have a loner ID.4 that does the same thing. I also seen the same complaint on the Volkswagen owner forum. Talk to dealer and they said they would look at it. I own a 2021 VW ID.4 and that didn’t happen in that car. I think if I push the windows control that should put window up then it should go up not down.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that after driving and parking the vehicle in the garage overnight, the following day the contact became aware that the front windshield was cracked from the driver’s to the passenger’s side. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was determined that the windshield was possibly impacted by a pebble. The vehicle was not repaired. The mechanic informed the contact that the windshield was on backorder however, the vehicle was drivable. The vehicle was taken to a glass repair facility and the contact was informed that the replacement windshield was not available. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The approximate failure mileage was 4,994.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY/WIPER I own a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 AWD Pro S. Which has significant distortion in the windshield which I noticed almost immediately after picking up the vehicle. There is significant distortion about halfway up the windshield. When it is raining it makes it very difficult to see out the window. It seems worse on the driver's side. I brought it to my VW dealer for its 10,000-mile check-up. Service told me I needed new wiper blades. When I told them it was less than six months old and should be covered under warranty, they said that the wipers were only warranted for one year or 7000 miles (if I remember the mileage correctly. I'm not convinced there is anything wrong with the wipers. But they also didn't have them in stock and had to order them. It is VERY difficult to see clearly even inb light rain. In addition, the intermittent wipers speed are fast at one end and too slow at the other..with no in-between.

Nov 2023 SEATS 2023 VW ID.4 S. After backing into our garage and parking with my Wife and two kids, my wife attempted to exit the passenger door. As she exited, our daughter immediately behind her began to scream as the passenger seat had completely reclined on its own. We panicked as we had no idea what was going on. My initial thought was to hit 'memory 1' on the passenger seat, only to find that memory 1 was now the fully reclined position. This continued on for 15+ secs as my Wife and I tried to pull our daughter away from the back seat. Unfortunately, her legs were pinched by the passenger seat and she was unable to move. Finally, I was able to dissengage the seat by manually adjusting the recline. This was an extremely scary situation that could have caused serious harm to our child. Additionally, this seems to be a common issue as reported on VW forums and Reddit. There were no warnings and we did not hear the seat reclining.

Nov 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ID4 intermittently giving me errors to have electric system checked. And when the error comes on it will reduce performance so I can only go about 10-20mph. Sometimes if you turn the vehicle off for like 30 minutes then error will clear but then come up again another time when starting the vehicle. Which is dangerous to just have it reduce performance on you at random.

Nov 2023 VISIBILITY/WIPER The windshield cracked after a very minor rock impact right where the windshield meets the frame on the passenger side. The impact was so minor that I barely even noticed it - only once I saw the crack (large crack, maybe 10-12 inches) did I think back on what could have caused it. Safety issue: obviously a windshield that cracks to the point of replacement after a minor impact is a safety problem, as is driving a windshield with a large crack. It has not been inspected and the issue hasn't been reproduced by anyone (dealer or service center). However - an odd number of people have referenced a very similar issue (minor impact causes cracked windshield) on an internet forum. No warnings, obviously.
