| Jul 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | Screen (both steering wheel and bigger screen to the right) go blank intermittently without any data being displayed (computer resetting itself excessively). | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | AIR BAGS | Airbag light is "on" and dealership stated that a driver seat sensor is not working. I assume this turns off the airbags. This puts the occupants at safety risk. This occurred approximately one week after I purchased the vehicle. I purchased the vehicle on April 17th, 2023. I took the vehicle to the dealership for repair and this safety critical part has been on order for 3-months. The dealership has prioritized the part but it is still on back order with no ETA from VW. VW should stop production at the factory and take a factory safety critical part for this vehicle that is under warranty. I contacted VW Customer Care and the dealership multiple times. No escalation has occurred. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | 1. FRONT COLLISION WARNING SENSOR DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WORKING. THE FRONT SENSOR DOES NOT DETECT ANYTHING IN THE FRONT WHILE IN DRIVING MODE. COULD BE A SOFTWARE OR SENSOR ISSUE. NEEDS TO BE CHECKED OUT. 2. WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, USUALLY ON THE STOP SIGN OR RED LIGHT. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHES OFF OR GOES TO THE PARK MODE. IN ORDER TO SWITCH ON THE VEHICLE, I NEED TO STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE, LOCK THE DOORS, THEN UNLOCK THE DOORS, THEN I CAN RESTART THE VEHICLE. TO DRIVE. LOOKS LIKE THERE MUST BE A SOFTWARE ISSUE. NEEDS TO BE CHECKED FOR THE SAFETY AND CONVINCE. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES | I have never been in an accident in my entire life, never got pulled over by a cop, and have only ever driven one car prior to the vw. I always have my car in “B” mode. During the crash on 4/02 I was going about 40 to 35 mph coming off the highway tried to slow down more to 25 to go on the roundabout but it wouldn’t, I had the brake collision assistance on, but unfortunately it did not assist me in trying to stop, even when I pressed down on the brake pedal completely. When I tried to turn the steering wheel, that had locked and I was unable to avoid hitting the sign and curb and going over the cement median which cause both my left tires to go flat. I got a call from the Volkswagen SOS and at that time the person was talking to me, I had to maneuver my car off the cement median to move it to a safer road as I was in the middle of a dangerous place and it needed to be towed. The road I had the incident on is the one I take to work every day and I have never had an issue. There was no issues with the weather on that day ether. I have only driven this car 703 miles. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 1 Towed Medical attention | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES | On April 22nd the car was in an accident when it struck the rear of another car at a red traffic light. I had stopped at the light with car in “B” drive mode and the brake on Auto Hold. I was stopped at the light roughly 2 minutes with my right foot on neither pedal. The car was in Auto Hold brake mode as I recollect the Auto Hold indicator being illuminated. The car remained stationary during that period until it moved forward without any action from myself. I am convinced I did not hit the gas pedal. There was damage to both my car and the car in front. There had been no change of the traffic light light nor had the car in front moved when this occurred. I had not experienced this issue in my limited driving before the accident (1700 miles) or subsequent to the accident. I contacted the Volkswagen dealer following the accident and dropped the car off for them to investigate. They advised me to open a case with Volkswagen of America to get their involvement which I immediately did. Volkswagen CARE assigned a regional case manager. The dealer service department performed a 3 mile test drive and could not reproduce the problem. Volkswagen of America did not investigate the accident relying on the dealer service department to use the on-board diagnostics to read fault codes. They found two fault codes that required the replacement of the ICAS1 module (the vehicles primary computer) and the driver door handle – the latter was not related to the current recall on the vehicle. These were manufacturing defects and they stated were not the cause of the accident. I find it concerning that Volkswagen of America did not investigate the accident for product issues nor did they explain (when asked) why a faulty major component that controls the operation of the car could not be the cause of the accident. | Crash: Yes Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID. 4. The contact stated while the vehicle was charging at a Volkswagen charger center, the charging port that attach to the vehicle caught on fire causing the vehicle to burn. No one was injured. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and a case was filed. The failure mileage was 2,494. | Crash: No Fire: Yes | 2,494 |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM | The actuator on the charging port cover broke. I tired to get it fixed under warranty, but it has been two months and the part is still backordered from Germany. The charging port will not stay closed, so when it rains, water is getting into the charging connection and it is discolored, cannot tell if it is rust. I am concerned about plugging the high voltage plug in to the wet connector. I try to dry it, but it still seems wet. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | * After parking on a hill (with the car facing uphill) and putting the car in Park, as my wife was gathering her things to exit the car, the car suddenly released from Park and lurched backward, rolling into the parked car behind it. This caused a dent on the back of the ID4, fortunately no damage to the other car. And especially fortunate that no people were hurt. * We called the dealership and also opened a case with VW corporate. Both were very responsive. After a week of running tests, they returned the car to us because they couldn't reproduce the issue and didn't find any error codes through their diagnostics * While driving the car myself, I experienced the issue again in a different context -- I was pulling out of a parking lot, on a downramp waiting to enter the street. As I lifted my foot from the brake preparing to drive into the street, the car lurched backward, up the downramp. Fortunately there was no car behind me and no pedestrians walking by. We reported this to the dealership and VW. They immediately took the car in again and kept it another week. Ultimately one of the techs at the dealership did experience the issue. We have a written report from the dealership that says, "Verified customer concern. Vehicle slightly rolled back before moving forward." (report uploaded) However, neither the dealership nor VW could trace this to an "error code" or a root cause. With confirmation of the issue from the dealer, I formally asked VW to cover the costs of the repair. VW said they would not, because there was no "error code" that pointed to a manufacturing fault. I argued that if we have confirmation that the car is doing something it shouldn't be doing, the fact that VW doesn't know why doesn't mean it's not their responsibility. The car is still potentially very unsafe. * We repaired the car at our expense (invoice uploaded) but I would still like VW to take responsibility for the cost and also ensure the car is safe for us and for others | Crash: Yes Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | POWER TRAIN | When maneuvering off our steep driveway and performing a right turn onto the road, it's necessary to reverse back up the driveway to do this. When putting the car in reverse and then pressing the accelerator, the car went forward (more than a small roll, about a foot or so). This happened 3 times in the course of this maneuver - so put car in reverse, applied accelerator car went forward, braked to stop car going forward, put car in reverse, applied accelerator, car went forward, and repeated. This took us dangerously close to a drop off. This seems like a safety problem that the car goes forward to that extent when in reverse. The problem has been reported to the dealer. They have not tried to reproduce this problem. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,BACK OVER PREVENTION | I was pulling into a parking structure when the left side of the vehicle (door handles, windows, sensors) lost power. I was able to park the vehicle and then have it towed to the dealership. Although it happened at very low speed, my safety was at risk. It would have been very dangerous if this had happened on the freeway. I was unable to open the door or to close the driver window. The dealer found a blown fuse. They have not been able to identify a cause of what would cause a fuse to blow like this. They continue to work on it (we are on day 3 now) including working with VW of America engineering. The two recalls on this vehicle have been address (approx 10 days ago). I have had numerous other problems with this vehicle that I don't believe are related to this particular incident apart from the recall related to the door handles. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | Instrument panel to turned black, thus blocking access to essential information, such as current speed of the vehicle, the status of cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assistance, and parking collision warning. The problem happened couple of times. Also, the Carplay feature freezes and is interrupted a lot. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | On the evening in question I stop the car in 5 ft front of my garage, which still does not have an automatic garage door opener. I press P to engage the parking brake and take it out of drive. I returned one phone call getting a voicemail and I don’t recall the exact sequence but I definitely had my seatbelt off and I reached to the passenger seat where I had left some things that I needed to take into the house, at that point, and again with neither of my feet on or near the accelerator , I noticed the car was moving and the next thing I knew it crashed through the garage door and hit another vehicle. The estimate for damages to my vehicle is about $14,000 and Volkswagen and insists from their analysis of the black box that nothing is wrong. However there are some issues that I’d like to discuss. | Crash: Yes Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE | I was passing on a highway ant high speed and the car shut down. It gave me about twenty seconds to coast to a stop on the shoulder before it completely turned off. This happened twice. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | STRUCTURE | Since we purchased the vehicle in December, 2022, the doors have been unable to open on at least nine occasions, sometimes locking passengers in the vehicle, and sometimes locking passengers out of the vehicle. Using the remote key does not allow the doors to open, only making a clicking sound. As we approach the hot summer months, it is a safety risk to not be able to exit the vehicle. In addition, it is a safety risk to not be able to get into the vehicle when needed. The vehicle has been taken to two different dealerships on three occasions. The service advisor at Lindsay Volkswagen of Dulles, VA commented five times while the vehicle was being picked up that he did not believe the vehicle was safe to drive and he wouldn't drive in it with his family. The dealerships were forced to return the vehicle against their judgment by Volkswagen (manufacturer) so that it did not remain "out of service" and trigger lemon laws. VW Customer Care insists that this is part of the open recall on this vehicle but that there is nothing unsafe about the vehicle locking people in the car. They claim that if it was unsafe that NHTSA would issue a stop-drive order, instead of just the recall and stop-sale order. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE | 1) Brakes: Brakes decelerate and is difficult to stop the vehicle. This is not in all cases when I stop. When I need to do an emergency stop I have to push the brake pedal very hard and pedal pressure feels low. I hope I dont get into and accident when trying to stop. 2) Lane departing warning: The vehicle some times would interpret the street white lines or yellow lanes incorrectly. It would sometime jerk my steering to correct my driving. If a white line stops at an intersection and starts after an intersection it would try and correct my driving. I think this is very dangerous. Should have the option to switch off auto lane correcting and just flash a warning. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES | The driver door is randomly popping open, at low speeds and high speeds. At low speeds, when trying to back out of driveway or pull into driveway or slowly pull up to red lights or keep up with cars in a left turning lane waiting my turn to turn, the door will randomly pop open and the car slams into park and turns off of Drive. I then have to shut the door, put the car into drive again and try to pull forward without the doors popping open again. This cycles at times where I have to repeat. The car does not go into park when doors pop open at high speeds, speeds greater than 12 ish mph. However, the door will randomly pop open at high speed. I was going 51 mph on the highway and the door popped open. I documented that with a picture. I reached out to several VW dealer garages. They said that they could not do anything for me because there currently was no fix for the recall. I have an appointment call with VW America today at 2pm today. I filled out online surveys with VW to tell them how unsafe this feels driving the car and this happening. We drive the car ONLY when necessary between my spouse and I bc of how unsafe the situation is. I'm not sure what to do or what i can do. I'm stuck with a brand-new car with only 3000 miles that had doors that randomly pop open while the car is in motion. Please advise. Thank you. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |

| Apr 2023 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,STRUCTURE | 2023 VOLKSWAGEN ID 4. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARD TO NHTSA SAFETY RECALL 23V-213. THE CONSUMER WAS SOLD THIS VEHICLE AFTER THE RECALL DATE, AND IS REQUESTING TO BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COST OF THE CAR. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | On Friday, April 7, 2023 after driving the car locally it displayed a "electrical system not working properly" error message. Were able to drive the vehicle home, though power and acceleration were reduced. Contacted the local dealership and took the vehicle in to them on Saturday, April 8, 2023. As of April 26th they have provided no status updates on what caused the error, how to resolve the issue, or a timeline of a repair. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2023 | POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that a message to “Disconnect the Charging Cable” was displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle also independently shifted to park(P). The contact attempted to shift into drive(D) however, the vehicle failed to respond. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the dealer stated the E-brake motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that on occasion while placing items into the trunk of the vehicle, the contact noticed water on the rear passenger’s side in the charging compartment. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer stated that the passenger’s side rear trunk strut needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer again and the dealer sealed a hole on the rear passenger’s side roof rack. The manufacturer was contacted but the manufacturer provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 1,000. | Crash: No Fire: No Towed | 1,000 |
| Apr 2023 | SEATS | Vehicle of Issue ID-4 2023 Vin # [XXX] As Reported to VW Customer Support 04/18/2023 The vehicle has a very dangerous problem, being the driver's seat Sensor. The Sensor triggers the Vehicle into park with a slight shift of body weight. This situation was not explained to me by the Dealership Sales Team. This has happened several times. Twice while backing up, as I went to look along side of the driver's door area to check clearance and the car jumped into park. The door was closed and slightly twisted left to view the area. Again as I approached a stop sign, I shifted my self to adjust the seat belt, another time as I was adjusting my pants it went into park. The latest incident caused an Accident. The accident occurred as I was going through a Car Wash. I shifted my weight to get my hand into my pocket to return my credit card and the car jumped into park. That caused the vehicle to jump into park in the middle of the Car Wash resulting in the vehicle behind me to strike my rear tailgate. North Port Police were called and recorded an incident report because it was on private property. The car wash declines responsibility. This is not a good safety feature, it is an unrealistic expectation of the consumer to sit perfectly still while driving. Will this happen at a higher speed???__________ Do all VW Vehicles have the same Seat Sensor (Issues)???__________ I brought the Car In for service 04/17/2023 asking the sensor be checked or for a Software change or an adjustment to the Seat Sensor to be changed to a different weight threshold or HAVE the sensor disabled. Sunset VW of Sarasota would not do any diagnostic without a VW Customer Support approval because an accident was involved. On 04/20/2023 VW Customer Support will not acknowledge or authorize a Investigative Service on this seat sensor issue. They said it was my fault the seat sensor triggers the car to jump into park This is not a normal characteristic for any vehicle. | Apr 2023 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | It seems the computer is not calculating correctly the vehicle performance. After charging the vehicle to 90% (73.8KW) of the 82KW only delivers a portion of what the computer states. at 90% delivers 210 mile; however , the onboard computer states that the performance is 3.2Miles/KW, which should translate to a performance of 236.16 miles (73.8 KW X 3.2Miles /KW = 236 miles Is the data being altered by the vehicle's computer? | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |

(248) To Whom It May Concern RE: ID.4 VIN: [XXX] Unexpected acceleration The above vehicle was involved in an unwarranted accident fortunately only involving vehicles. In a parking lot at rolling speed while turning right into the parking space the vehicle charged ahead full throttle crossing a parking bumper, 8’-0” inch loose dirt, another parking pumper, and still full throttle into a Tesla Y in the opposing parking space. Many including the investigating State Trooper, the body shop working on the vehicle, and numerous internet similar accidents strongly suggested an unsafe condition vs. an unsafe action. We drive a Mazda with the tech equipment, other Tesla’s, etc. and all have the emergency braking benefit. They will not drive themselves into a wall, parked car etc. Additionally the air bags did not deploy - wife’s shoulder was bruised significantly. Understandably, my wife no longer wishes to drive the vehicle which accounts for this letter to you. We would like to return the vehicle for a full refund immediately. Would you please consider the request to return our purchase funds and sales tax. | Apr 2023 | AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | I have never been in a car accident in my entire life. This was my first ever electric vehicle, and I really loved driving it for the one week I owned it before the brakes failed to stop it. On 03/31 I had to restart the software several times because it froze when i was trying to connect it to Apple Carplay, but it was fine the next day. During the crash, I had the brake collision assistance on, but unfortunately it did not assist me in trying to stop, even when I pressed down on the brake pedal completely. When I tried to turn the steering wheel, that had locked and I was unable to avoid hitting a sign and curb. The road I had the incident on is the one I take to work every day and I have never had an issue. There was no issues with the weather on that day ether. Not only did the brakes not work but the the brake assist failed, the collision avoidance system, the steering wheel locked, and the airbags failed to deploy. Both my left side tires became flat. If I would have known how unsafe this was, I would have never selected it in the first place. I chose this vehicle because I thought I would be safe and I wanted to save money on gas. I am so extremely terrified to drive this car and the dealership service center claimed there was nothing wrong with the car. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 1 Towed Medical attention | Unknown |
