May 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER I am writing to bring to your attention a critical safety concern regarding the Toyota Tundra, specifically related to the rear tailgate functionality. It has come to my attention, and I have personally experienced, that the rear tailgate of the Toyota Tundra can unexpectedly open while the vehicle is in drive mode if the key fob is accidentally pressed. This poses a significant safety risk to not only the driver but also to any passengers and other drivers on the road. The unintended opening of the tailgate can lead to cargo falling out onto the road, causing accidents and potentially endangering lives. I believe that this issue warrants immediate attention and investigation by the National Transportation Safety Authority (NTSA). It is imperative that Toyota addresses this issue promptly to prevent any potential accidents or injuries. I urge the NTSA to conduct a thorough investigation into this matter and work with Toyota to implement a solution that ensures the rear tailgate remains securely closed while the vehicle is in motion. Additionally, I recommend that Toyota issues a safety recall to rectify this potentially hazardous defect. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that the NTSA will take appropriate action to address this safety concern and ensure the safety of all road users.

May 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER I was traveling on a hwy with the highest posted speed limit in the U.S. Without any warning the entire engine stopped. Made it to shoulder and the info screen went haywire. Tried six separate times to restart vehicle. Restarted and made it to destination without further incident. The outcome of sudden engine loss could’ve been fatal to myself and other drivers that were near me at the time. Took vehicle to dealer and was told no codes were found at all.

Apr 2024 FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM Fuel gauge randomly resets itself to full. This could lead to the vehicle running out of fuel without the driver knowing that it was low. Confirmed by dealer via video evidence of the vehicle taking 14.4 gallons to fill when the gauge read over 3/4 tank (tanks is only 32 gallons).

Apr 2024 POWER TRAIN I was traveling south on [XXX] in Sarasota, FL, around 70-75 miles per hour and the engine shut down with warning. I coasted to a stop and was able to pull in the left emergency lane out of traffic. This could have been a tragic situation because cars were traveling 70 plus mph in that area. I tried to restart the car but all I got was a clicking sound from the starter, I also smelled a faint burning smell form the engine compartment. I had to have the vehicle towed into a local Toyota dealership and was advised several days later that the engine would have to be replaced as metal shavings were found inside of it. Apr 2024 SERVICE BRAKES My brakes have been squeaking since I purchased this brand new vehicle. It wasn’t too bad in the beginning, It was safe to assume, being new truck that I needed to drive it more or so I was told, by a friend. Then, after the first oil change, I started to realize that either my brakes were going bad, and/or it just didn’t feel too safe, especially driving through rainy conditions. So by the time my next few oil change with dealerships, I complained and wanted brakes checked. I was never told they are fine other than they were inspected on paperwork, so that was reassuring until, it started up again. Fast forward to recalls being done and again, I complained about brakes, and a Toyota consultant told me that was a common complaint and all he could do was clean up build up or dirt, and possibly may do the trick. Which was nice, and it helped for maybe a day or two and then started back up! I have no choice other than to trade it, although aside from that brake issue, I want to keep this truck! I feel this issue is dangerous and why hasn’t there been some type of solution from Toyota? Is it going to take for drivers and family to be killed in accidents for something to be done? This is aside from being annoying and embarrassing when pulling up in a brand new truck and these brakes squeezing so loudly - and also, and most importantly the safety of my family and self while in this truck! I love the truck and every other vehicle I have bought through Toyota, but this safety issue has forced me after no answers from Toyota to write this complaint in hopes something can be done soon. Please keep me updated.

Apr 2024 POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM This truck was sold even while it was under recall over 1 year ago. That recall, for fuel tank issues STILL cannot be repaired as there are STILL not enough parts being distributed to dealers to fix it. Since that time, 2 additional recalls have been issued and dealers have no indication when they will be able to fix it. This vehicle should be treated as a lemon and taken off the road at Toyota's expense.

Mar 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER Toyota's design of their dash mounted "infotainment" display screen software requires reentry of a 6 digit pin any time vehicle internet connectivity is lost. This interrupts the map routing display that appears on the display screen through sources such as Apple CarPlay. This Toyota software designed interruption of the route display represents a safety hazard in that it prompts the driver to take their eyes off the road to screw around with entering a 6 digit PIN code. Worse still, according to Toyota documentation, EVERY TIME vehicle internet connectivity is interrupted, this same prompt to enter a PIN is displayed. Apple CarPlay and I'm sure other map apps are not designed so poorly as to require the driver to reauthenticate their credentials upon loss of internet connectivity. I feel the design of Toyota's infotainment system software represents an unacceptable safety risk to American drivers.

Mar 2024 FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,LANE DEPARTURE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the navigation screen would shut off and then it would restart with no information. The contact would have to stop driving and reenter the information. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that he needed to show proof of the failure for the issue to be repaired. The driver-side seat functions failed to operate as well as the lane departure warning system was inoperable. The vehicle was not repaired and the failures continued to occur. The contact stated that while his mother was driving at an unknown speed merging into traffic, the front passenger side of the vehicle collided with a trailer. The contact stated that the vehicle collision warning audio system failed to warn of a collision. No injuries were sustained. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the dealer stated that the failure could not be duplicated or determined. The contact received a notification on the Toyota app for NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V566000 (Fuel System. Gasoline) the dealer was notified of the recall and informed the contact that the remedy was not available. The contact then inquired about the interim repairs which were to install protective materials and a clamp on the fuel tube however the dealer stated that they could not perform the interim remedy. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and that the dealer failed to complete the interim recall remedy, a case was opened. A Toyota engineer was sent to the dealer however, no failures were found with the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.

Mar 2024 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM The fuel gauge will randomly reset itself to full. This poses a safety concern as the truck may run out of gas while it is showing that it is not empty. This could happen while doing something like pulling out in to traffic or turning across a lane of traffic. This affects many trucks, not just mine.

Feb 2024 STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER This vehicle has tow mirrors that are located way too high for the driver to see over them - I'm 5'10" and my son is 6'0" and neither of us can see over these mirrors. Over the past year I have had multiple close calls because of the very large blind spot created by the tow mirrors on this vehicle. There is also excessive plastic around the mirror that excerbates the problem. It is only a period of time before a serious accident or a pedestrian collision will happen because of this manuracturing/design defect. Very concerned and disappointed. One specific incident was when I was turning onto a road at a slight and looked both ways and pulled out in front a car that was behind the blind spot and going 60 mph. Very close to a major accident.

Jan 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER My truck’s windows (all 4) have terrible seals (not tight to window) that are allowing water to enter door. Windows have a jerk motion when wet and lowering. Moisture is present inside the cab on windows. Rear windows are extremely loose and can be a potential safety issue (I have video). Risk can fall on rear passengers because of instability of windows. Repair tech stated in report that there was an issue with windows by reproducing same motions with new trucks on lot (I have video from Toyota tech). Just inspected by dealer. No warning lamps. I have been trying to resolve this with Toyota Corp. with no further details of solution. I have all correspondence.

Jan 2024 STRUCTURE regarding my 2023 Toyota Tundra. The passenger side front window is non-operational, having come off the track and proving impossible to raise. Upon consulting the dealership, it was determined that the Regulator and Motor for the window require replacement. It has come to my attention that this issue is not isolated to my vehicle, as numerous reports on social media platforms highlight a recurring problem with faulty windows in this model. The prevalence of inoperable windows, whether stuck in the up or down position, poses a potential hazard. I urge the NHTSA to investigate and address this matter promptly to ensure the safety of all Toyota Tundra drivers and passengers.

Dec 2023 FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE The contact owns a 2023 Toyota Tundra. The contact stated that the vehicle was not obtaining the correct fuel mileage. The contact stated that, while tracking the mpg, the vehicle was averaging 15.7 mpg. The difference was approximately twenty percent less than the sticker mpg. The contact stated that the mpg sticker stated that the mpg would be 20 mpg. The contact stated that when the vehicle was purchased, he was not provided two keys. The contact stated that while his wife was using the key, the key detached and was lost. The chip was still in the fob, and the contact was able to open the vehicle. The contact stated he was concerned about not having an additional key. The contact was unable to obtain the second key for the vehicle. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who test drove the vehicle and the vehicle was averaging 12.2 miles while driving in the town. The dealer informed the contact that the extra batteries in the vehicle might account for the difference in mpg. The dealer completed a wellness check and informed the contact that the vehicle was working as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 50.

Dec 2023 FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM When I drive the vehicle for a period of time and use a 1/3 of the fuel in the vehicle and park on non level surface: Meaning the front of the vehicle is pointed up and rear is lower the fuel gauge will register full on vehicle restart. Even if I drive the vehicle around and park it on a level surface and restart the vehicle it still fails to show the correct amount of fuel in the vehicle. In addition it will slowly subtract fuel based upon driving that is inline with normal fuel usage: It never registers that you are actually 1/3 lower then indicated on the gas gauge. I have identify two ways to address the issue of the gauge not registering the correct amount of fuel in the tank: 1) Refill the truck with maximum amount of fuel 2) Disconnect the negative battery terminal, let the truck sit for 30 seconds, and then reconnect the negative battery terminal. It will then register the correct amount of fuel in the truck The safety concern is I could run out of gas in unsafe manner on the road.
