Jul 2025 STEERING,ENGINE Car has broke down a total of 4 times since I have gotten it from Toyota back in December of 2023. I have a dash-cam now that has footage of the car breaking down. Toyota fails to acknowledge my concerns and comes up with excuses and tells me to wait until it happens more frequently. I would love to have this car inspected, but as Toyota has stated they cannot get the issue to repeat. My safety for others and myself feel uneasy with the whole ordeal as it happens at the most random times. The first few times my car has broke down, the steering wheel locked up and forced itself all the way to the left on its own causing me to hit a curb and median. Manual control over the steering wheel was not possible. Luckily with this occurring both times I was going a slow speed. The other two times I had full control of the wheel but my engine would stop and the engine stopped message would appear on my dash screen. Vehicle has been inspected by the dealership 4 times with no luck on repeating the issue. Breaking down presented a dash message of engine stopped, abs system stopped, power steering stopped and would quickly cycle through warnings and shutdown.

Jun 2025 STEERING Vehicle Information: * Make: Toyota * Model: Corolla Hybrid AWD * Model Year: 2024 * Current Mileage: [14,000] * Mileage When Problem Noticed: ~8,000-9,000 miles Incident Description: My 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD has a severe steering defect. After a right turn, the steering wheel consistently fails to return to center, remaining 5-15 degrees (up to 20 for sharp turns) off-center to the right. It does not self-correct. Occasionally, this also occurs after left turns, but less frequently. The vehicle requires constant, active manual correction to stay straight. If I release the wheel, the car can drift right, posing a significant collision risk. The steering feels "floaty" and lacks the expected resistance to return to center. This issue began abruptly around 8,000-9,000 miles. Multiple dealership visits and alignment checks have not resolved it. No prior accidents or modifications. The Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) system functions smoothly, keeping the car centered. However, immediately after disengaging LTA, the manual steering defect reappears, indicating an underlying mechanical problem, not an electronic one. Safety Concern: This defect creates a serious safety hazard. It demands constant driver attention and effort, leading to distraction and fatigue. This compromises directional stability and significantly increases accident risk, as the car will veer off course if not continuously corrected. I urge NHTSA to investigate this defect. Similar "sticky steering" or "poor return to center" issues are reported in other modern vehicles, and Toyota itself issued CSP 22TE02 for a related "slower to return to center" issue in 2018 Camry models, proving this is a known type of defect, not normal operation.

Jun 2025 UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE Dear Better Business Bureau, I am filing a formal complaint against Toyota Motor North America regarding a serious and unresolved safety defect in my 2024 Toyota Corolla LE (VIN [XXX]). The vehicle experienced two incidents of sudden unintended acceleration—the second, on [XXX], resulted in a collision. Despite my repeated efforts to resolve the issue, Toyota has failed to respond adequately or provide critical diagnostic data. In both incidents ([XXX] and [XXX]), while stopped at a red light, the vehicle suddenly surged forward despite my foot being on the brake. On [XXX] this caused a collision. My vehicle has remained undrivable since. Toyota conducted a diagnostic inspection on May 29 under Case #[XXX]. I’ve repeatedly requested access to the raw data from this inspection to understand the defect, but Toyota has not responded. Emails to the assigned case manager, Ms. Cynthia Ware, have gone unanswered. When I was directed to reply to a support email, it bounced back as a “do-not-reply” address, redirecting me to a login page which falsely claimed I had no active cases. This created an endless communication loop. Toyota’s lack of transparency and support is unacceptable—especially given the severity of the issue and the fact that the vehicle is still under warranty. I am requesting: Immediate release of the raw diagnostic data from the May 29 inspection A prompt resolution, including full repair, replacement, or buyback Clear, responsive communication from an authorized representative This is not only a financial burden, but a serious safety risk. I respectfully request BBB’s assistance in securing a resolution and holding Toyota accountable. Thank you for your time.

May 2025 SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE I was leaving out of the parking lot of the shops Santa Anita. I was parked underneath by [XXX] and proceeded to to leave and turn out right towards the wide open parking lot. At the time I was leaving, it was completely empty. This parking lot is wide open as I was leaving and I’m going no more than 15 mph when suddenly a beeping sound goes off and the car slams on its brakes on its own! I didn’t even have enough time to stop on my own and look to see what the alert sound was. The car stop and jerked me so hard and slammed forward so hard. Thankfully I was in an empty open parking lot. That would have cause a very bad car accident and I would have been badly hurt and the car that would have slammed into me from behind! This has left me with so much anxiety and I am now very scared to drive this car at all even. I haven’t even had this car for a year and this is the second time I’ve had an issue with it. And I tried explaining to the dealership that for the past couple weeks to month that when I drive the car, it has this pulling feeling when I’m coasting. It has never felt that way before. This is supposed to be a new car. It doesn’t even have 15,000 miles on it yet! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Apr 2025 STEERING My [XXX] daughter's 2024 Toyota Corolla stopped in the middle of the road and would not move. She received a message that said, "engine stopped steering power low". She called me in a panic and could not move the car out of traffic. I asked her to turn the car off and back on and it resolved the issue. This could cause a traffic fatality with loss of control of a car in traffic. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Apr 2025 EXTERIOR LIGHTING The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the headlights failed to respond. There was a warning light illuminated that there was a failure with the front headlights. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the failure was with the headlight; however, the dealer was not able to repair the headlights. The contact was then informed to take the vehicle to a friend of the dealer. The friend of the dealer confirmed the failure and was unable to repair the headlights. The friend suggested that the vehicle be taken to a Toyota dealer. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the headlights were not the OEM headlights. The vehicle was diagnosed with connector failure and that the headlights needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 15,311.

Mar 2025 STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES I was able to distinguish today the car noises my vehicle is making happens when I break. Like a “eeeeek” sound. My mileage is under 8,000, had the car almost a year. Also I notice my wheel stiffens. I’m able to verify it happens when I merge - specifically when the lane dashes end. The wheel somehow gets tight even when driving with both hands. As if the vehicle gets confused. This has happened about 5 times this year but every time it happens- I brace myself for the vehicle to crash since I can’t control the wheel, no matter how strong I try to gain control. The wheel gets too tight to steer. These episodes lasts about 3-4 seconds. I am going to take it to the dealership on April 1, 2025. Also there were no messages on my dashboard when these episodes occurred.

Mar 2025 ENGINE Upon startup in cold weather conditions, a brief but loud grinding/rattling sound will occur. The noise is related to an inadequate spring inside of the intake camshaft gear which will not push a small cylinder in place to lock the intake camshaft gear in place. When not in its proper place, the gear will rattle in its housing, causing the brief noise. If the gear rattles against its housing too hard overtime, it can break and cause catastrophic engine failure by sending metal pieces into the engine, including pistons and rods.

Nov 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE [XXX] In reading the above article, Toyota recalled Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles with many complaints and situations mirroring our accident. Before the accident, the vehicle displayed no warning signs. Despite the driver pressing the brakes and the assisted braking feature seemingly turning on (e.g., signal lights on the computer system), neither seemed to work in this situation. The damage was far too severe for the assisted braking feature to have activated, along with the driver pressing the brakes. After viewing the matter with those involved in the accident, many of us concurred that we believe either the braking system or the computer system failed. In the aftermath of the accident, the police, manufacturer, or third party hadn't reviewed the vehicle's status. On top of that, our insurance refused to investigate, urging us to discuss the matter with Toyota. Thus, we'd propose that the Corolla SE may experience an issue similar to the vehicles in the article. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Nov 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER My wife and I have been having great difficulty reading the center portion of the instrument panel because the illumination is too dim. We have visited the dealership and were instructed how to maximize the brightness, but it is still not sufficient. The small icons that appear at the top of the center section of the instrument panel cannot be viewed while we are driving, unless we place our head close to the screen. To do this our head must be at the level of the bottom of the front window. In that position we cannot see the highway sufficiently to be “safe.” We both have good vision. In the past, we have owned over thirty automobiles and have never had a problem seeing the instrument panel.I have discovered that occassionally the illumination of the center screen of my instrument panel is fine. The car’s computer apparently dim’s it without my consent. I drove 60 miles (about an hour) on a California freeway, and for the first 20 minutes I had good illumination. Then it suddenly got to its usual dim state. I have asked several people at my Toyora dealership, and they cannot help me. I, therefore, am requesting someone at your offices to look into this problem, and call me by phone to help me solve this important problem. The best way to viualize this problem would be to inspect my auto at my home.

Oct 2024 STEERING,ENGINE My son reported driving home from school. He was stopped an intersection ready to make a turn. When he stepped on the gas pedal to go, the engine stopped and a message "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low" message appeared in the dashboard. Engine light and steering light also came "on" the dash. This may occur while driving and put the driver at risk. His 2024 Toyota Corolla was brought in to the Wesley Chapel Toyota Dealership yesterday 10/29/2024. The technician did not find any error codes and found the battery and alternator to be in good working condition. Issue unresolved by the dealership.

Sep 2024 POWER TRAIN This is an issue I have noticed with my car shortly after I bought it. The problem is that the car has a noticable delay in acceleration when accelerating from a complete stop. After doing some research online, I found that the cause was the car's CVT transmission, and that a delay in acceleration happens with other cars with CVT transmissions as well. This could be potentially dangerous especially when making right turns on a red light or when making unprotected lefts on a green, as the window of opportunity to go is sometimes short in those situations, and delaying for even a second could mean the difference between a collision or a safe turn (especially since there are some fast drivers that go much past the speed limit and will appear from behind a hill all of a sudden). What is especially problematic is that the car will rarely accelerate normally when I press the pedal, but I would say around 80-90% of the time, the car will have a delay about 1 second before it actually starts moving. To my knowledge, this problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. I bought the car brand-new about half a year ago so it shouldn't have any problems. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone, and there were no warning lights or any other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. I didn't really notice that this car had this problem when I first drove it home from the dealership because I was not used to so many other aspects of the car, but after I got more used to driving it, I realized that the delay in acceleration wasn't normal.

Sep 2024 LANE DEPARTURE Ever since my vehicle was new, the driver side blind spot monitor will periodically not work. This issue occurs primarily when starting the vehicle using the Toyota app, but also will have the issue when starting the vehicle normally. When all conditions are met, the driver side blind spot monitor will fail to illuminate during an entire trip unless the driver either: turns the vehicle off and back on, or: goes into the vehicle settings while driving and turns the blind spot monitor off and then on again. Upon doing either of these things, the driver side blind spot will resume normal operation. The issue has been confirmed by a Toyota dealership and is on file for my vehicle, and I also have video footage of the issue. While the dealership was able to witness the issue, the vehicle produces no codes and so the Toyota engineer advised it was a condition issue and not a vehicle issue. But this issue has been happening to me randomly since I got the car, and all of the facts point to this NOT being a condition issue. There are also SEVERAL other complaints on Toyota and Lexus forums for this exact same issue for varying models such as the Corolla Cross. This is a safety risk and can increase the possibility of a crash. While blind spot monitoring is intended to be an aid and should not be solely relied upon, inevitably there are drivers who will rely on that blind spot monitoring, not know it's broken, and potentially get into a collision due to the system leading them to believe the coast is clear, when it indeed is not. The first time I noticed it, which was within one week of owning the car back in January 2024, I was trying to get over to the left, saw that the blind spot was not illuminated, and almost made the turn except I checked manually first and saw there was a vehicle in my blind spot that the car did not pick up on. The fact that all it takes it turning the car off and on again leads me to believe this is a safety defect that needs addressed.

Incident: Apr 2024

Aug 2024 SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE The system that is problematic for this vehicle is the Pre Collision System (PCS). This system is way too sensitive even on the lowest sensitivity setting, and I have experienced the car braking in error on multiple occasions when driving up or down a windy road. When I approach a bend in the road and there is a car parked on the side of the street, my Corolla will think that I am about to collide with the parked vehicle and make a loud beeping noise and automatically hit the brakes. This has frightened me on a number of occasions, and I am concerned that one day the car will brake in error while there is another vehicle behind me, resulting in a read-end collision. The only consistent method of avoiding this is to drive past the median in the road when approaching bends, which I very much dislike doing, as driving in the middle of the road has its own obvious risks. I have tried contacting the dealership about this, and was told to contact the service department. The service department was no help, saying that they aren't able to do anything about it and that I could try lowering the sensitivity of the PCS, which I had already done. This wouldn't be such a huge issue if there was a way to permanently turn it off. The process for turning it off takes about a minute, as it requires navigating a menu and finding the PCS option to turn off. Unfortunately, the PCS automatically reactivates every time the car is turned off and on again, and even if I use the shortcut method of holding the lane assist button for several seconds to disable the PCS, the car's screen will constantly flash, telling me that the PCS is turned off and annoying the driver to turn it back on. I know that Toyota does not have this issue with their PCS systems on their other vehicles, as I have driven a 2019 Camry before and the PCS system never went off when I drove on the same road, which led me to believe that the system on this 2024 Corolla is somehow defective.

Jul 2024 UNKNOWN OR OTHER I was accelerating on an on-ramp to merge with traffic on a freeway, and my corolla’s engine shut itself off. All the electronics stayed on and flashed the messages ‘Parking brake malfunction’ and something along the lines of ‘Secondary collision brake system malfunction’. I was stuck coasting in traffic and could not start the engine in neutral. I had to make the car come to a complete stop on the freeway in a lane with no shoulder, put it in park, turn it off, and then back on again. All messages and lights disappeared. The vehicle had to be restarted to continue driving. I was going about 1 to 2 mph when the issue happened. The vehicle was in motion and stalled while other vehicles were in motion putting my safety at risk, had I been going any faster or if there was an increased amount of traffic. I reported the problem to the dealer service center, but they were unable to reproduce it. The vehicle was inspected by Toyota only, no police or insurance.
