| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the instrument panel went blank and continued flickering independently and the rear-view image failed to display properly while the transmission was shifted into reverse. The vehicle was taken to a dealer January and September of 2024 but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact had received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE) and 24V344000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The failure mileage was 11,000. VIN too confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | 11,000 |
| Oct 2024 | STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL | My cars backup cameras have never worked properly and the dealer keeps changing me $485.00 to run a complete diagnostic every time I take it in. My car will erratically pulled to the right for no reason and caused the right front tire to blow forcing me to have it towed to the dealer and they had to replace both front tires which cost me $900.00 to replace. The car locked up the brakes and turned it to the right causing me to sever my left outer thumb which has cost me over $700.00 so far and is going to require me to have 4+ hours of surgery on my thumb by a surgeon and they haven't given me the cost of the surgery yet but it is estimated at over $7,000.00 and I am left handed and doesn't allow me to use that hand to hold the steering wheel or anything else. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 1 Towed Medical attention | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | The door handle is an electronic button with a manual lever for the door to open in case there is no power or an emergency when a rescuer needs to open the door. I noticed only 1 door handle could do this and brought in for repair. The rest requires a lot more strength and 3 of the 4 doors work, but the dealership is reluctantly replacing the failed door handle. There are many who have the same issue but many who aren’t aware the potential danger during an emergency. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | As I was driving, the infotainment screen went black and Apple CarPlay stopped playing. As this happened, the driver’s information screen still worked but changed to grey scale colors. After about 4 minutes of the infotainment screen being black, the driver’s info screen also went black. This continued for about one more minute when both screens rebooted on their own. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | All instrument panels and electric panels turn black. It is not replicable, it is not predictable, and there is no fix yet available. I have been in touch with VW and my dealer multiple times, and they do not have a fix. My dealer asked me to escalate the issue to the corporate side of VW and I did - they told me that I should take it into service. We got the service center on the line and they told them the same thing they told me: there is no fix available for this issue. As we go into winter, this has now become a CRITICAL safety issue. I cannot safely drive my vehicle, particularly in the snow or in the mountains, where I live. I am appalled at their lack of regard for this issue, and have requested to trade my vehicle in for the model that does not have the issue. They have informed me that is not an option. I am at a loss - I have a vehicle that I pay for that I cannot reliably drive. I have to drive my other leased vehicle so much that we are well over the mileage. This cannot continue like this. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The screens go black during driving and the gps flickers on and off creating a dangerous distraction. VW told me they do not have the technology yet to fix it, even though it is a huge hazard. in addition the car has a problem charging and holding the charge. The display of the miles is not accurate as to how much energy the car holds. In addition the contract said I had 3 years of free charging, but that has been taken away. so the car cannot charge well in addition to no free charging. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID 4. The contact stated while driving 65 MPH, the instrument panel was inoperable. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (STRUCTURE) and 24V344000(BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure; however, was unable to confirm when parts would be available. The failure mileage was unknown. VIN tool confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SEATS | Electrical- my windows do not roll up, when using the window switches the windows will go down if they are already down a little. I will have a window half down and try to roll it up and it goes down. -I have also had several occurrences of my screens becoming in responsive or not even displaying. -My doors: my doors do not open on the initial attempt to exit or enter the vehicle and my passenger handle sometimes comes off of the body. Lighting- I get popups telling me that my headlight system has a failure. Seats- it’s very common for my seat to just start the massagers or to start heating | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES | I was backing out of an outdoor shopping center slot located at the end by the curb. I had to attempt this three times due to traffic and another car that was also trying to back out. On my third attempt, I hit the curb with my passenger rear wheel. When I changed gear to move forward, the ID4 jerked violently three times. At this point my hands were on the wheel and my feet were not on either the accelerator or the brake. Immediately after the third jerk the engine revved up and car took off. I tried to brake but was flying over 2 curb hit the road and flew over 2 more curbs with plants in the middle. The braking did not stop the vehicle. Coming up over the last curb the vehicle hit a parked car sending backward and it hit 2 more vehicles. No one was injured, since the vehicles were empty. The police did come and wrote an incident report, but not a police report because in California since it was property only they do not generate a report. However, this could have been fatal since people were waking about the parking lot. There were not any warning lights or messages. It has not as yet been inspected by by anyone . The car is available for inspection at a collision center. I am not sure which component failed and why it accelerated, or did not respond to the brake, or deploy the air bag upon impact. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Towed | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The infotainment system in my vehicle has cut out and gone black for a good ten minutes while I’m driving and this has happened twice now and there is no remedy for the recall and this is upsetting because it could be a safety concern | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S. The contact received a notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION, EQUIPMENT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ENGINE | Sudden unintended acceleration I was pulling next to a curb as I was parking. My speed was approximately two or three miles per hour. My right foot was on the brake slowing the vehicle. My right hand was at the two o'clock position on the steering wheel. My left hand was not on the steering wheel. The cruise control was not engaged and had not been engaged for at least ten or fifteen miles. We had just traveled about 45 miles. The weather was clear and the roads were dry. The temperature was in the upper 40s. As we were slowing, the car suddenly accelerated as if I had fully depressed the accelerator. Since my foot was already on the brake I jammed it on and the car stopped. I’m estimating that we traveled no more than ten feet before coming to a stop. There was a car parked in front of us. The acceleration was not initiated by me, it was sudden, and it was strong. It was impossible for me to have accidentally pressed the accelerator as my right foot was on the brake. It also was impossible that I could have accidentally pressed the cruise control resume switch as my left hand was not even on the steering wheel. To me this represents a serious situation. Had we been in traffic at the time, or if there had not been sufficient room in front of the car, this could have resulted in an accident. Please let me know if I can provide any additional information. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notifications of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repairs. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the vehicle started vibrating but failed to slow as needed. The contact depressed the brake pedal three times before the vehicle came to a jerking stop. The contact continued to drive the vehicle to the residence at slow speeds. The failure had occurred twice. The dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 9,800. VIN tool confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | 9,800 |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed in inclement weather, the alarm system detected that the doors were opened, causing the vehicle to come to a complete stop; however, the doors were properly closed. Additionally, the instrument panel display screen intermittently went blank for 15-20 seconds while driving. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after opening and closing the doors. The dealer was notified of the failures, and the contact was informed that the VIN was included in NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 24V651000 (Structure) and 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the parts to do the recall repair were not yet available. The vehicle had not been repaired. The contact stated that he had not received notification of the recalls. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and two cases were opened. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | 5,000 |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | Collision warnings/automatic breaking has failed on vehicle multiple times. Presumably due to the software/hardware not being able to process. This has led to several incidents of near collision when in travel assist (self driving) and in general operation where it has actively backed into objects. Dealer did not have comments on incidents. Also raised infotainment resetting during driving from current campaign which is 6+ months old and they did not have an ETA on a resolution. Recommend pushing a forced buy back campaign as VW is unable to fix these dangerous issues. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |

| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER | The defective/incomplete vehicle software occasionally causes an dangerous condition. The child safety lock for the back doors can disengage without driver input or knowledge. The software in the vehicle occasionally clears (or resets) customized driver settings because the software is defective/incomplete. One of these "driver settings" appears to be the engagement of the child safety lock. When the vehicle user software occasionally resets, the child safety lock can disengage without obvious notification to the driver. My intention is for the child safety lock to be always engaged. The child safety lock control is a touch button located on the driver door, which illuminates when engaged, and goes dark when disengaged. My four-year-old child has opened the rear door next to the child car seat. Luckily this was while the vehicle was stopped and the child was secured into the car seat, so the child could not exit the door at that time. It was at that time I realized the child lock system was off, although I have previously had it on and had not commanded it to shut off. The safety risk in this situation should be obvious. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | There was an electrical issue associated with a recall where while driving I had lost power to my dashboard and infotainment system on more than one occasion. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Call module not working correctly which leaves the gps in the vehicle inaccurate and presents a safety issue for vehicle location using sos. VW states it's a software issue and won't even evaluate it. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | On 9/17/2024 roughly at 10:00PM, while in the drive-thru picking up food, my Volkswagen ID.4 suddenly self-accelerated out of nowhere as I was slowly driving towards the window to pay for food. I was completely shocked—I’ve never experienced anything like this. I tried to react quickly, but the car surged forward and slammed into a large cement light post. The impact was hard, and the car is now severely damaged. What really shook me was that none of the safety features I’ve come to rely on worked—there was no automatic braking, late front collision warning, and despite the heavy impact, none of the airbags deployed. I ended up feeling all bruised and now have some severe mid-back pain. The thought that I could have easily been hurt more seriously, or worse, could have harmed someone else if this had happened in a crowded area, is traumatizing. This has made me completely lose trust in the vehicle’s safety systems. If the car can do this in such a low-risk situation, I can’t imagine what might happen in a more dangerous scenario. I brought up other safety concerns to Volkswagen that were completely dismissed. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 1 Towed | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EQUIPMENT,BACK OVER PREVENTION | The contact owns a 2023 Volkswagen ID.4. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V344000 (Back Over Prevention, Equipment, Electrical System); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the instrument panel frequently rebooted, causing the screen to go blank for an extended period. The local dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The vehicle remained with the dealer. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 100. VIN tool confirms parts not available. | Crash: No Fire: No | 100 |
| Oct 2024 | STEERING | On the morning of September 27, 2024 while stopped at a retail store in Wake Forest, NC, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 steering column module part #j764 failed without warning. The steering column locked up and would not unlock after many attempts. The vehicle’s drive systems were also impacted resulting in the drive units/gears to lock resulting in the car becoming inoperable until the unit is replaced. Contacted VW Customer Care on October 1 for repair assistance. At this time, VW believes consumers should be burdened with the cost to repair this failed critical component which is necessary for the car to function and operate. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | NHTSA Recall Number 24V344 This recall has been open with no resolution, time frame to resolution, or any communication whatsoever from VW of America for over 18 weeks now. Fortunately for me this issue has only affected my vehicle a few times (I'd estimate 5-10 instances) but the lack of followup and attention from VW is becoming very disconcerting. When we purchased this car in 2023 VW had materials advertising quarterly software updates for continuous improvement and new features. Their inability to provide a single update in ~20 months, including now when a critical fix is needed, feels like a bait and switch. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | STRUCTURE | back right door opened up while driving through our neighborhood at slow speed turning onto another street a few months ago. at the time didn't think much of it and maybe just a fluke but it makes sense now that I know there's a door handle recall. also now our driver side outside door handle won't open as of a few days ago and our VW dealer doesn't know what's going on after trying to fix it and waiting for corporate to call them back. wanted to make sure this was reported in the event we have further issues and they cant repair it. thanks | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | I am writing to complain that VW has not offered any assistance or solution to the electronic software failure noted in NHTSA Recall # 24V344. I have been experiencing software and electrical failures that affect the center and dashboard displays. I have no speedometer or rearview camera display, no warning systems, no cruise control, etc. Also, the car periodically locks itself and won't allow me to enter the car with the key fob, and I have to leave the window open to open the car manually. The lack of a dashboard display of speed is dangerous. I brought the car to VW dealer who reset the software and that fixed the problem for one month and then the problems returned. VW claims it is a software problem but has not offered any software updates or repairs since it was first published as a recall in May 2024. My car is too dangerous to drive when this software failure occurs--which sometimes happens while driving nd immediately affects the drivability and safe operation of the car. When it happens, nearly all the warning lights and messages start blinking and cycling while driving. We need help with putting pressure on VW to offer a solution and repair of this serious operational issue. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
