| Jul 2025 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION | On multiple accounts did I find my 2023 Hyundai Elantra SEL rear camera not working. Now it displays a green screen and I’ve tested it but with someone directly right behind me while in reverse (not moving) the sensors aren’t going off. This is a huge safety concern for a lot of people who own Elantras | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2025 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Horn stopped working at at around 30,000 miles. After taking it to the dealership to get fixed it stopped working at 70,000 miles again. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jun 2025 | FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | I was driving in completely clear weather on [XXX] . No cars were within at least 100 ft in front of my vehicle. Suddenly the emergency braking system alarm flared and the brake engaged. This could have caused someone tor rear end my car but luckily no one was behind me. The brake also fairly quickly disengaged. I took it to Pearson Hyundai where I had bought the car ([XXX]). They had the car for a couple of days and said they found nothing. They could not duplicate the incident. I would not have wanted to ever drive the car again as is, but the technician pointed out I could leave on the warning but eliminate the braking in settings. I am reporting this because if this happened with a child in the back seat on a road like the 95 it could do incredible harm INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Mar 2025 | ENGINE | Oil filter cartridge housing is leaking from the top. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Feb 2025 | POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | The transmission is slipping to the point that I have almost gotten in several accidents due to impatient drives and the car not engaging in gear like it should. Vehicle also has several electrical faults reverse braking system engages at random with nothing in its way,the key not in vehicle warning will sound randomly while key is in vehicle, horn stopped working out of nowhere, while washing vehicle with keys in pocket vehicles key warning system will sound about every 30-60 seconds only when washing vehicle, random front collision warning system with nothing in front of vehicle, seat height adjustment randomly stops working but the rest of the electric seat adjustment works then seat will start working again at random. When taken to dealership for diagnoses the dealer refused to diagnose electrical issues unless I paid out of pocket even though vehicle is under full warranty and all systems listed are warrantied. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jan 2025 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | The HORN has been replaced on 4 separate occasions through Hyundai under warranty and it can not be fixed. This seems to be a wide spread issues involving the 2023 and 2024 Hyundai Elantra models and there are multiple TSB's at the dealerships. Hyundai has not done a recall or come up with a fix and it renders the horn useless and can cause a major safety problem or accident. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jan 2025 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Both high and low horns failed and the vehicle has 61,000 miles. Hyundai said this is a “known issue” to the point that they keep these parts in stock and replace them regularly. This is a safety concern, and required for safety inspection. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Dec 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Horn has stopped working. A driver was about to change lanes into my vehicle on the highway, and I went to honk my horn to alert them, but it would not work. It is unclear if the issue is with the sensor in the steering wheel, or with the wiring or horn itself. I have continued to test the horn over the next few days and confirmed that the issue is persistent. The lack of a horn meant I was nearly able to avoid an accident by swerving away from the other vehicle. If there had not been a gap in traffic, I wouldn't have been so lucky. The vehicle is available for inspection. I have an appointment with the dealer on Friday 1/3/25 to have this addressed, likely under warranty. No one else has inspected the vehicle at this time, and there are no warning notifications, etc. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Dec 2024 | VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE | While driving at highway speeds the vehicle will suddenly decelerate forcing vehicles behind said vehicle to make defensive maneuvers to avoid hitting our vehicle. We have taken the vehicle to the dealership twice for this condition. This time we were told it was the EGR valve, but it was on backorder. We are now forced to drive this vehicle until it is repaired. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Dec 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER | The rear view backup camera doesn’t show. Some days it works most of the time it’s green and distorted. I know it’s common issue so it should be apart of the 21-22 Elantra recall | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Dec 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | Horn just stopped working! Fuses are intact. I see this is a consistent complaint for this model. Cannot pass safety inspection and I’ve only had the car for a year | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Oct 2024 | POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES,LANE DEPARTURE | I have been encountering a series of troubling and erratic issues with my vehicle. These problems occur under various driving conditions, including acceleration, steady-state driving, and braking. However, the most prevalent and problematic occurrences seem to transpire during acceleration and braking. During acceleration, I've observed inconsistent behavior. Sometimes, the car shifts smoothly, with minimal torque drop between gears. On other occasions, the vehicle accelerates initially but then abruptly loses all power between gears, resembling the sensation of someone engaging the clutch in a manual vehicle and shifting slowly. This results in a temporary power loss lasting 1-2 seconds, followed by an over-revving and clutch slip, leading to an unintended surge in acceleration. The issues I've encountered during braking typically begin with a chattering noise and vibrations that seem to be an imbalanced or shocked reciprocating mass, I can assume maybe one of the clutches/flywheel . This is often followed by decreased brake pedal linearity, requiring increased brake pedal pressure to stop. This normally results in an unintended aggressive forward jerk just before coming to a stop, akin to someone releasing a clutch on a manual transmission vehicle too quickly when downshifting while the engine speed is too low. One night I went to get diapers for my baby and it was raining and I hit the breaks and the breaks lost control and I crashed into a median wall and my car kept spinning around. Ambulance were called and I was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Injuries: 1 Towed Medical attention | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | The vehicle applies automatic emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by from behind in an adjacent lane, when the Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist, feature is set to “Active Assist.” The owner’s manual states that this feature operates when the turn signal is turned on in the direction of the detected vehicle. However, my experience shows that the car applies brakes even when the turn signal is off and the vehicle is driving straight within its lane, without changing lanes. As per NHTSA description automatic breaks to be applied if the driver ignores the warning and tries to change the lane. But Hyundai design applies brakes even if car driven within lane without any warning before applying break | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER | There was a recent over the air software update. Since the update, the speed limit shown on the dashboard, does not match the posted speed limit. This causes the cruise control to change from 70mph, to 55mph. This happened a few times, and always at the same place on the PA Turnpike. Yesterday it did it and there was a tractor trailer behind me. When my car started to decelerate, the driver of the truck laid on the horn because he had to react quickly. I am lucky that he did not hit the rear of my car. This is a safety issue! Also, why does Hyundai feel the need to control drivers speed, especially when there is no government mandate to do so. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | Car was breaking hard because of Active Assist despite that no car was in front. It was breaking consistently until I finally was able to disable the Active Assist. Luckily, there was traffic and driving at less than 20mph but this also happened some time last year at the same area where there was no traffic and was going at a minimum speed of 45mph and to have the Active Assist break hard put me at great risk of getting rear ended. I have footage from the dash cam which I unfortunately cannot attach as it's more than the 10MB limit. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Sep 2024 | ENGINE | The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving 70 MPH, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. During the failure the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the cause of the failure was due to faulty motor mount bushings. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 290. | Crash: No Fire: No | 290 |
| Aug 2024 | ENGINE | On July 28th 2024, I took my new 2023 Hyundai Elantra to its first oil change at a Take 5 oil change center. They replaced the oil, filter, checked the fluid levels in my car, and topped the fluids off. That evening, I noticed there was a liquid leaking from behind the passenger side tire, and at first thought it was water from the A/C, but in the morning, I noticed a puddle of liquid was under the car. I went back to Take 5 on August 5th and informed them that I believed there was coolant leaking from the vehicle following my oil change. The worker checked and said my coolant reservoir was completely empty, and he refilled the coolant and told me to take it to be diagnosed at a full service auto center. On August 13th I noticed there was a smell of burning metal coming from the engine bay when I turned the car on and took it to a Firestone where they informed me that the radiator cap had failed and was no longer holding the pressure in the radiator, and that almost all the coolant had leaked from my car. I had the radiator cap replaced and kept the original to take to the Hyundai dealership to see if this was a manufacturers defect or the result of improper handling by the Take 5 worker. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Aug 2024 | TIRES | The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra equipped with Kumho Tires, Tire Line: Solus, Tire Size: 205/55/R16, DOT Number: 1K2LMYAY. The contact stated that when his daughter started the vehicle in the driveway, she felt that the vehicle was riding low on the driver's front tire side. The contact stated that he and his daughter observed a blister on the tire sidewall that had burst. The contact stated that the tire was flat. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or tire repair shop. The tire was not inspected and was not replaced. The contact stated that the failure was the third Kumho Solus 205/55/R16 that had developed blisters on the sidewall and failed. The approximate vehicle failure mileage was 20,000 and the tire failure mileage was 3,500. | Crash: No Fire: No | 20,000 |
| Jul 2024 | ENGINE | While driving at the freeway, the car engine failed. Car alarms went off and digital dashboard show alert of the engine failure. Battery and all other symbols in the dashboard lighted up as well. The vehicle lost speed. Dashboard displayed text indicating to shift gear to neutral and to press the start engine button. Engine restarted after following directions. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Jul 2024 | STEERING | The contact owned a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while the contact's daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the lane assist was activated, however, the vehicle independently steered to the right. The contact stated that the failure occurred on a two-lane road. The contact stated that due to the failure, the vehicle crashed into a ditch, where there was a concrete covert where the vehicle came to a stop in an open ditch. The contact stated that the transmission and other unknown parts were detached from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard. The vehicle was deemed a total loss. The contact stated that the vehicle had been taken to the dealer previously because of failure and an unknown sensor had been replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. In addition, the contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline and report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,305. | Crash: Yes Fire: No Towed | 20,305 |
| Jun 2024 | FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | car applies emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by at higher speed from behind in adjacent lane when the blind spot collision feature in my car is set to "Active Assist". As per the owner’s manual page number 7-46 to 7-52, the collision assist is designed to operate when turn signal is turned on in the direction of detected vehicle. Also, it is mentioned that the audible warning will sound. In actual scenario car is applying breaks even when turn signal is off, driving straight, no lane change. Also, there is no audible warning sound when car applies automatic brake. Owner’s manuals write up is not matching with the issue I observed, and this is very serious safety issue. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | Multiple times driving on highway at posted speed limit and vehicle displays emergency braking system and just comes to complete stop on highway with oncoming cars going 65mph. Has happened 3 times before. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE | My 2023 Hyundai Elantra has started alerting me while driving that I was going the wrong way down a road. The alert goes something like: WARNING Entering into wrong way detected. This occurs when I'm driving the correct direction. I've Googled the issue and other Hyundai owners have documented receiving the same message. I believe this is dangerous if one is driving someplace unfamiliar and receives this message. It has the potential to alarm a driver into making a U turn and traveling into oncoming traffic. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| May 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM | Hi horn and low horn stopped working after 1 1/2 years of driving and only 7000 miles. This is a safety recall because it will fail West Virginia state inspection without the horn working. Also, it puts myself at risk while driving because I can't alert oncoming traffic if they are heading towards me. This could cause an accident. Hyundai Service Center will be inspecting the issue on 05/07/24. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
| Apr 2024 | ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES | While driving in a straight line my brakes and brake pedal were activated without any pressure being applied and maintaining about 45 mph. I pulled over to check the car and see if there was anything stuck in the wheel well and saw nothing. I got back in my car and proceeded to drive 2 blocks where i then went to park and upon turning left to pull into a parking spot my car immediately stopped and indicated that the emergency brake had been activated. I had not touched the brakes or the hand brake whatsoever and using the handbrake to turn on and off the emergency brake did not fix this i had to just wait until it was released. Upon researching this other drivers of the same model and year have experienced this problem in more dangerous situations on the freeways and at high speeds. I believe the problem has to do with the emergency brake being activated due to an electrical problem. | Crash: No Fire: No | Unknown |
