Date Component Summary Severity Mileage
Aug 2023 SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE This event happens intermittently, and has occurred approximately 4 times. When the issue occurs it happens as follows: 1. Vehicle comes to a complete stop, and driver's foot has depressed brake pedal 2. Vehicle automatic start/stop feature turns off engine. 3. Driver lifts foot off pedal, begins to apply pressure to gas pedal. 4. Vehicle automatically re-starts engine 5. Vehicle starts to move forward, and then lurches - it feels like the brakes are being applied by the vehicle independently from the driver's action. 6. Alerts start appearing on the dashboard - a message that the Forward Collision Warning System has been disabled and the "BRAKE" light starts flashing for 30 seconds to a minute afterwards. 7. Vehicle then starts to move forward without issue, Collision System message goes away, but BRAKE light on instrument cluster continues to flash for a period of time. This issue presents a safety risk as the vehicle does not respond to driver's input as expected when this issue occurs, appears to brake on its own. Interferes with a driver's ability to move through an intersection after stoping. I have taken the vehicle to a Honda dealership (Penske Honda, Indianapolis Indiana) and they were unable to replicate the issue and did not find any stored error codes in the vehicle comptuer.

Aug 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM On at least 5 occasions the car has not restarted after going into auto idle while stopped. Normally after pressing the brake pedal all the way down while stopped, the engine will shut off and then restart after releasing pressure from the brake pedal. When it doesn't restart, all the lights on the dashboard come on and you can't do anything. It won't restart if your press the start button and you can't shift it to neutral to push it out of the road. Eventually it will restart by pressing the start button. I have not had this problem if I turn off the auto idle, however you have to manually turn off the auto idle every time you restart the car.

Aug 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE 1)The back hatch will randomly close. The first time it happened I didn’t know what was going on and it hit me in the head. Today my kids were there and it almost hit them but I pushed them out of the way because I knew what was happening as it makes a certain noise first. 2)It stalls out randomly at red lights. 3) the doors won’t open or close at times. 4) the dvd player gets so hot it almost burns you and the dvd player won’t work. When I contact the dealer they say they can’t do anything since it happens randomly and it if doesn’t happen when it’s at the dealership they don’t know what to do so they don’t even make an appointment. Two years ago we complained that the door didn’t have a sensor because it shut my two year olds hand in the door. Honda acted like we were crazy. Then it became a recall and they ‘fixed’ them. But now they won’t open or close.

Aug 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER The right-side sliding door for the rear seat row has a recurring malfunction. When the vehicle is locked and not running the sliding door will open a small bit, all by itself. It will remain stuck in this position and the electrical sliding door mechanism will not operate it. No one can exit or enter the vehicle using that door. The door can be forced to the full open position with substantial exertion by an adult male. It will then close and the electrical opening/closing mechanism will work alright for some time until the problem occurs again. This vehicle is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle dealer service department said they had seen this problem before in other vehicles. This component of my vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or others. When this problem occurs, a warning message is displayed on the vehicle electronic dashboard saying "Right sliding door problem."

Aug 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE Front windshield camera, controls adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure mitigation, front collision mitigation, auto high beam, all the lights came on and all the features stopped working. We were 1500 miles from home when this happened had it repaired at a dealership $1300. I called Honda corporate and after 2 days a customer service representative called me back. He told me the vehicle was 2500 miles out of warranty and it's a car and cars are going to break down. That I should drive it back home and have the dealership repair it and they might be able to help with some kind of reimbursement. I did not want to drive it that far without all the systems functioning so he said well that's on me.

Jul 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER When at a stop light at a busy intersection the idle stop feature would not restart the engine. The vehicle became stalled in the middle of traffic and I could not restart the vehicle for approximately 8 minutes. A transmission failure warning came on the screen and I was unable to operate anything in the vehicle. This could have caused me to be hit by oncoming traffic or rear ended. The vehicle has been inspected by the dealer and they were unable to reproduce the problem. This has happened a total of 3 times within the last 3 months.

Jul 2023 FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE The following errors suddenly appeared one-at-a-time, causing all the advanced driver assistance capabilities to stop working, including regular cruise control: * ACC - Adaptive Cruise Control Problem * LKAS - Lane Keeping Assist Problem * Collision Mitigation System Problem * Road Departure Mitigation System Problem * Auto High-Beam Problem * Brake System light also appeared. Battery replacement did not fix issue. Errors usually appear within about 30-60 seconds of turning the car on, but errors occasionally go in and out intermittently. Lights come on with a distracting beep one-at-a-time, causing major distractions while driving and suddenly disabling any active cruise and/or LKAS features while driving in traffic. Dealer stated the windshield mounted LKAS camera needs to be replaced for $1592 + tax. Safety features should not be flaky, and customers should not bear the cost of repairing safety equipment such as this. This should be strongly considered for a recall.

Jul 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER I purchased my 2020 Honda Odyssey 3 months ago. We did notice that part number 72650-THR-A12 the rear door latch was carroded. The dealer had told me not to be concerned. Well I have been unable to drive my vehicle because I am waiting for that part which is on national backorder. The incident happened two weeks ago my sliding door opened while driving with my kids in the car. I had to pull over to try to close it I thought it was a fluke. Turns out I couldn't get it to stay closed. I had to drive it back home with the warning lights that my door is open. I can't get it to close at all or lock the vehicle while driving. There should be no reason why the inside of my door is all rusted and carroded. Not sure how water is getting in there. This leads to a failed door latch which then leads to the sliding door malfunction. The part is on backorder which makes me think that there are many other people experiencing the same problem.

Jun 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE Vehicle’s “Engine Idle Stop” feature malfunctions unless it is turned off manually. This is an energy conservation feature which turns off the engine when stopped. However, when lifting the brake, the engine does not turn back on at times, sometimes fully stalling the vehicle. At times, numerous lights have come onto the dashboard after this happens. At other times, the vehicle has completely turned off, leaving the safety of the driver and passengers at risk, particularly at stop lights, stop signs, and when in stop and go traffic. I’m continually worried someone is going to rear-end us when they see our brake light go off at an intersection. Vehicle has been brought to Honda dealership who stated they did not know the cause and replaced the battery. Problem was not solved and continues to happen.

The lights on the dash dimmed and no other message or warnings appeared. As I pulled off the interstate I was unable to use the brakes. We tried to put the van back in Drive but was not successful. We were able to get the vehicle in park and come to a stop. I turned it off and back on. No other messages appeared. The vehicle drove as expected and brakes worked.

Jun 2023 ENGINE The contact owned a 2020 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to restart. As a result, another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact’s vehicle. The contact sustained injury to her neck and lower back that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot and deemed a total loss by the insurance company. The dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 28,800.

May 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE Car was stopped in traffic and has a feature that shuts off the engine when stopped (in Drive but with brakes pressed). When trying to proceed forward car shuts down with numerous errors and does not start back up for 5 minutes. Cars are honking and having to drive around us. Eventually was able to get the car running and moved to a safe area. Errors car displayed included: blind spot info system problem and transmission problem

May 2023 FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM The idle stop caused my car to turn off on the highway while I was stopped in traffic. Unfortunately, I was the last car in the line on the highway and the truck coming behind me was coming at a rapid rate of speed. Thankfully, the same issue had happened to my son the week before and he was able to tell me that putting the car in park and turning it off and back on would fix the issue. There is a service bulletin 21-013 related to this issue but not a recall. This is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

Apr 2023 ENGINE SOMETIMES (NO DISCERNIBLE PATTERN) AFTER STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT OR A STOP SIGN, THE CAR SHUTS OFF AND WILL NOT RESTART FOR SEVERAL MINUTES. THE HONDA SERVICE CENTER AT THE DEALER WHERE WE LEASED THE CAR SAID THEY HAVE HEARD OF SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH NEWER MODEL HONDA ODYSSEYS AND HONDA PILOTS BUT THERE HAS BEEN NO FORMAL RECALL. THIS IS A CLEAR SAFETY HAZARD. THE BATTERY HAS BEEN TESTED AND IT IS FINE.THE MECHANICS CANNOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR.

Apr 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE Auto shutoff feature regularly fails when attempting to restart the engine. It may delay the restart or put the car in park and not allow it to restart for over 30 seconds. I was stuck in stop and go rush hour traffic. The engine would not restart, leaving the car stranded in the center lane for over a minute while attempting to get the car to start and in drive.

Apr 2023 UNKNOWN OR OTHER While driving the infotainment system will go completely out. When this happens you lose all additional safety features (back up camera, lane notifications, etc). This also becomes a distraction to the driver as when the system goes out it make a loud noise or will have a continued crackling noise which is highly distracting to the driver. I have seen a number of complaints online about this issue and have experienced the outages almost daily while driving the vehicle.

Mar 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE Auto engine idle shut off issue and yes it is available for inspection. Upon exiting stop/start events(auto shut off at stop signs/lights/parking lots), engine does not restart. instead, it shifts into park, lights up all instruments on display panel, and requires a manual restart. vehicle is dead until restarted, posing a hazard to occupants/oncoming traffic. This has happened to me 3 times over the last two weeks. Didn't document date of 1st incident. 2nd incident was 3/22/23. 3rd incident was 3/25/2023. Immediately taken to dealer service center for repair. Dealer told us they couldn’t replicate the issue, that there are no codes, and no service advisories. We were told there was nothing they could do and to just turn off the feature when driving. The only one to inspect the vehicle was the dealer service center. No warning at all. Car just doesn't start and driver is left sitting and helpless in active traffic until the car can be restarted.

The contact stated while the vehicle was at a complete stop at the traffic light, the collision mitigation braking system (CMBS) warning light illuminated and a message indicating to shift to park(P) was displayed. The contact shifted to park and shifted back into drive(D); however, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact stated that he turned off and restarted the vehicle and was able to drive to his destination. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer however, the failure could not be duplicated. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.

Mar 2023 ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER On 18 January 2023 the tailgate on our 2020 Odyssey refused to open. Neither the inside switch nor the outside switch does anything. I crawled in the back and checked the fuses and both are good. I also discovered that the emergency tailgate release did not function. Took it to the dealer, Greenway Honda in Florence, Alabama, an hour from home, and they weren't able to find the fault with a cursory check and a reboot of whatever computer system is applicable. They said they need to keep it for at least a half day and "really tear into it." But we could not leave the vehicle at that time, having no transportation home. Eventual diagnosis determined the tailgate control module, the tailgate closure motor, and the tailgate latch had all failed. Parts were on backorder and no estimate on availability. After I contacted Honda corporate the parts suddenly became available at the dealership within a few days. Repairs were effected on 27 February at Greenway Honda, Florence, Alabama. We were without the full use of our vehicle for approximately six weeks. Occupants could become trapped in the vehicle if the front doors were disabled in a collision and electrical power was lost, rendering the sliding doors and the tailgate inoperative. The emergency release lever also would not function and this could trap occupants completely. Examination of the tailgate electronic control module shows water infiltration which conceivably shorted the closure motor and jammed the latch, making it impossible to open the tailgate. Photos of the failed electronic module were provided to the dealership and to Honda corporate. The failed parts are in my possession and are available for inspection.
